The other day we were browsing the web and this title caught our eye
"Cord-Cutting Is Gonna Suck in 2016, But It’ll Get Better" Naturally we had to take a look at the content included in that post. While they make some intriguing points we disagree with their overall assessment.
First of all they seem to base their entire argument on the notion that successful cord cutting is achieved by replacing your costly tv service with tons of streaming options. What they fail to consider is the vast amount of OTA TV that is
easily obtained with a decent antenna. We utilize our PC to record a lot
of the primetime shows and this virtually eliminates the need for a Hulu subscription. That's not to mention that all of the broadcast networks offer their shows for free through their apps and sites. It won't be live, and you may have to wait a week, but it costs you nothing which is a pretty sweet deal.
The next thing they suggest is that people are missing out on live sports. As our
numerous posts during the football season have shown, there is no shortage of live sports available OTA. And it's not just football, there are many baseball, soccer, hockey, basketball, auto racing, and other sports. They may not be as frequent as ESPN, but lets face it, ESPN shows a ton of content that isn't live sports.
Oh and if you're a Verizon mobile customer you can watch Thursday Night, Saturday Night, Monday Night, and locally broadcasted NFL games for free on your mobile device.
Also omitted are practical solutions for some of the problems they propose. We love Game of Thrones, and HBO has done a lot of really good things for cord cutters to legally access their programming for a fair price. However you don't need a year round subscription to HBO Now to see each season Game of Thrones, in fact you need it for at most 3-4 months, and that is assuming you don't have any patience to just wait until the season is mostly over to get away with one month. The same goes with pretty much any other monthly service they suggest.
Amazon Prime and its many many amenities costing $99/year is a bargain. There really is no need to argue that further.
Lastly the internet cap is probably a concern for some, but to our knowledge no ISP in the Charlotte area has any data capping policies unless you're utilizing your cell phone for your internet connection. Even still, if you're utilizing OTA you're probably able to eliminate a ton of streaming bandwidth from your data allowance.
While the truth is that the article is probably nothing more than click bait, the fact is that it does little to sway our opinion of cord cutting, and utterly fails to convince us that "it is gonna suck" in 2016 or anytime for that matter.
